Thank you for providing such a nourishing space for us to dive into our SE curiosities. The wisdom shared was incredibly helpful and yet even more impactful was the container you created, one in which I felt like there was space for all of me to be welcomed, without judgements or pushing/pulling. Truth can feel like a rare thing to experience in the world, and I got a taste of it in our time together. I hope to join for future consults as I know it is an important tune up for me and my work as well as a great opportunity to connect with others.

Differences disappear when faced with death.

Death as sacred metaphor, portal and inspiration.

A day-long retreat on November 1, 2025 * 930am-530pm

at Celebration Tree Farm & Wellness Center

facilitated by Sage Hayes

>>>Join a small group of courageous movers and explorers for the first ever offering of Death Songs.

Death songs is an emergent invitation and ritual where we move together to the songs you want played at your funeral.

We practice death as an embodied and sacred metaphor, portal and inspiration.

We’ll spend the day together building conditions for connection, depth, bravely exploring death and life, intensity and mystery, love and letting go.

Because this is the first time this retreat is being offered, the design for this retreat is emergent and evolving. The flow of the day will follow these themes…

Morning:

  • Connectivity: building coherence and connection with each other

  • Altar building for our time together - honoring ancestors and sharing our invocations

  • Embodiment practice - practices which support feeling our body, moving into presence, deepening connection to self and building capacity to explore intuition, emotion, thresholds and release

Afternoon:

  • Sharing our death songs with each other through moving together, sharing, presencing and heart opening practices

  • Closing circle to harvest our experience from the day

During this retreat we will be moving, dancing, sitting, sharing, going outside - wear comfy clothing. We’ll have breaks and at least an hour for lunch around 1230pm.

The flow, invitations and activities during the retreat will be embedded with lineages of intuitive practice, somatics, family constellations, 5 rhythms, biodynamic craniosacral, authentic movement and a deep devotion to creating a culture of care, consent and community.

Bring your lunch. Snacks and tea will be available.

Space is limited to 8-12 participants.

An inception…

I’m inviting folks to join this iteration if you’re ok with being a part of something that is at its beginning, something new and unpolished. Mostly it will be a series of invitations to connect with yourself, each other and whatever is beyond that calls to you.

Registration:

Pricing for this offering is a spacious sliding scale, $75-$175. You can put a non-refundable $50 deposit now to save your spot or pay in full. You can fill in the amount you’d like to pay on the payment page.

About the sliding scale: Please be mindful that if you purchase a price at the lowest end of the scale when you can truthfully afford the higher ticket prices, you are limiting access to those who need the gift of financial flexibility. Being honest with yourself and your financial situation when engaging with sliding scale practices grows strong and sustainable communities. To understand more where you fall on the sliding scale, check out this great resource.

REGISTER HERE.

Upon registration you will be sent a form to fill out and some preparation recommendations for our time.

Any questions - email me at sage@embodiedliberation.com

Where?

I am honored to be hosted by Jonah and Burdie at the Celebration Tree Farm & Wellness Center yurt. There are many trails on the property to explore during lunchtime or breaks. Celebration Yurt is a new beautiful circular space to celebrate creativity, wellness, community and the earth. The Celebration Tree Community Supported Forest is a place for families and people to connect with nature and each other through the forest, trees, wellness, art, food, and water.

Address: 125 Bowie Hill Road, Durham, ME

Why November 1?

is the Day of the Dead which made sense as the inaugural birth day of Death Songs. The Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, traces back to the ancient Aztec Empire, thousands of years ago, where death was seen as a natural part of life and not a cause for mourning. The Spanish colonization in the 16th century led to the merging of these indigenous traditions with Catholic practices, particularly All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. This fusion evolved into the modern celebration, which now combines Aztec rituals of honoring ancestors with Catholic holidays, culminating in a vibrant tradition that focuses on remembering and celebrating deceased loved ones.   While we will not be utilizing Day of the Dead rituals because I am not from that lineage, I feel as though it is a powerful day to bring this form forth.

Why death songs?

This project / vision was born out of these political times where as a species we are struggling to let go of death centered and fear driven ways of being. I sat for a long time with the question - what will it take for folks to be able to let go of outdated ways and unearned privilege and turn more courageously towards and into the evolution of life itself? What came to me was the idea of helping us creatively turn towards our own mortality using movement, the power of our circle and a fullness of permission to look at and beyond our fears. This project is more a prayer than anything else.

About Sage (she/hey/they) :

Emergent Somatic Practice workshop/retreat in Asheville, NC with Sage Hayes

EMERGENT SOMATIC PRACTICE

Join us in community and practice the weekend of September 19-21, 2025 in Leicester, North Carolina.

This weekend retreat will center queer / trans & non-binary / LBTQQI healing practitioners of all types including but not limited to therapists, body workers and movement teachers.  Practitioners outside those identities are welcome too and will be invited to support the centering of queer practice and healing.

This workshop will be facilitated by Sage Hayes (she/he/they), SEP, LMT, constellations practitioner, Ecstatic Dance DJ and ccompanied by local Asheville co-organizer D Parra (they/them/elle) of Condor Counseling

A non-binary approach to healing
There is so much emergent medicine and wisdom coming from the margins.

This workshop / retreat will open space to explore emergent somatic practice while centering queer / LGBTQQI / trans & non-binary healing practitioners.

A true impulse to heal is non-binary because embedded in the impulse to transform, is multitudes.  To be fully alive is to know this so deeply that our fear becomes less relevant than what is possible.  As our fears are cared for, our soul can begin to breathe.  Nothing need be discarded in non-binary realities.  We can arrive into our wholeness before we even know it is here.

We are often caught in a notion that to learn healing is to learn technique and theory.  While technique and theory at times have their place in a healing process, they are not primary.  They perpetuate notions that something is wrong and must be fixed, that there is a problem and a solution, that ‘doing’ trumps ‘being’.   Most healing modalities do not get practitioners ready for loving their clients well. In healing modalities birthed from within a colonial reality, we continue to teach students of the healing arts that the ‘doing’ the modality is more primary than an embodied stance of non-binary being.  Our world and our client's world gets minimally better, if at all, from a linear vantage point.  This workshop encourages us to co-create conditions in which fear-based binary realities can be dismantled and transformed with passionate and inclusive care.

In this moment of so much uncertainty and political targeting of marginalized communities:

  • What does it mean to show up as a healing practitioner who is a part of a targeted group?

  • What can emergent somatic practice look when safety is more of an concept than a attainable reality?

  • How can we utilize this moment to build embodied capacity, deep validation and strategies of embodied agency?

  • How can we utilize what’s arising through our bodies with generative resonance and useful grace?

This is a time where having a flexible and intuitive stance as a practitioner is essential with our clients. Being able to help clients generatively utilize this moment in their lives by offering deep accompaniment and a flexible somatic stance is key.

When the intention is to heal, the body will show us the way. The intentions and uncertainties clients bring to somatic work can act as an embodied compass which can guide our inquiry together.  One of the biggest learning edges and opportunities in practicing somatics is learning to utilize emergent and spontaneous openings with clients.  There’s often a lot more guiding information available than we ‘think’ there is.  The nervous system and body are constantly sending out non-verbal clues which can point us in surprisingly effective and helpful directions.  Clues can show up in the form of body movements, changes in vocal prosody, phrases a client uses which might have extra weight, energetic shifts, sacred pauses, ‘random’ detours and intuitive guidance.  This emergent information which arises during sessions is a way our client’s implicit wisdom is letting us know what is important and what is ready to be explored next.

Part of this territory includes setting conditions which gently encourage these embodied clues, to then notice when they arrive and to be able to meet them well and effectively in the moment with something exploratory and experiential.  This way of practice takes patience, courage and the willingness to open states of listening to and beyond our ‘practitioner mind’.

Our role is to become extraordinary listeners, to become attuned to non-linear realms of somatic communication and to accompany these movements from the deep with skill and care.  Listening and moving into a more emergent somatic practice can facilitate a less dominant flow of movement during sessions and generate more collaborative change.

In this experiential workshop we will open our capacity as somatic practitioners to work with emergent somatic material arising in our sessions.   We’ll explore many ways of listening and the varied elements of what we might be listening for.

This workshop will also center community building, sharing meals and a spaciousness in being together.

The workshop process will aspire to model all the concepts and practices being taught.

The 5 points of the emergent somatic practice compass we will explore are:

  • Anchoring in our practitioner body.  Moving from our wisdom and deep trust of the client’s innate inner medicine. Moving from an invitational stance and at the speed of trust.

  • Clarifying and kindling client intentions to animate a collaborative map of healing.

  • Increasing our capacity for utilization of the ‘sacred pause’ and uncertainty

  • Learning to listen for non-cognitive somatic cues and clues.  Discerning between movements of adaptive habit or movements of health.  How to spot energetic willingness.

  • Translating somatic information into experiential exploration and spontaneous activities.

About Sage Hayes:

Since 1999, Sage Hayes (she/he/they) has been building capacity and sight towards emergent somatic practice since beginning their work facilitating anti-oppression work in schools, churches and communities. An ever present inquiry for Sage’s deep dive into somatic has been, “What is justice in the body?”. Sage began studying healing arts in 2000 including somatic experiencing, biodynamic craniosacral therapy, therapeutic touch, developmental trauma work, family and systemic constellations and embodied anti-oppression work of all sorts.  Sage was a lead assistant with the Somatic Experiencing Institute for many years and mentors somatic students from all types of modalities.

Sage hails from Peaks Island off the coast of Maine and enjoys a vibrant local life while having the great honor to travel facilitating and teaching with somatic students around the world.  Most recently Sage has been offering embodied movement classes and somatic mentoring support with individuals and groups. Recently Sage had the honor of facilitating Love at the Center: Politicized Healing and Collective Liberation, an international gathering of healers and activists in Sicily this past fall.

Emergent Somatic Practice

Join us in community and practice the weekend of May 9-11th, 2025 in Hudson, NY.

Facilitated by Sage Hayes, SEP, LMT.

This workshop is being co-planned with Julia Taylor of Threshold Healing Space and Char Azad of Coming Home Healing.

This workshop is for healing practitioners of all types including therapists, body workers and movement teachers.

What is coming to light and how can we meet it well as somatic practitioners?

With so much uncertainty and political upheaval this is a time where having a flexible and intuitive stance as a practitioner is essential with our clients. Being able to help clients generatively utilize this with deep accompaniment is essential to meet this moment.

How can we utilize what’s arising through the body with generative resonance and useful grace?

A portal to welcome summer.

Join DJ All for Love (sage hayes) in their first official offering at Good Medicine as a member practitioner!

Even in these times of great uncertainty. let us welcome the beginning of summer with dance, community and movement which frees our body, heart and spirits.

Historically, May Day originated as a pagan celebration of spring and fertility, later evolving into a day of labor protest and solidarity.  May Day, also known as International Workers' Day or Labor Day, holds significance on multiple fronts. It marks the beginning of spring in many cultures, while also commemorating the struggle for workers' rights and better working conditions. In many countries, it's a day to celebrate the labor movement and its achievements. Collectively we can move mountains.

Dance is at Good Medicine, 7-830pm, 231 York Street. There will be ambiance. Cost $15-$35

Emergent Somatic Practice`

THIS WORKSHOP IS FULL.

Join us in community and practice the weekend of November 15-17th, 2024 in Ottawa, Canada for the workshop Emergent Somatic Practice with Sage Hayes, organized locally by Anne Walzak.

When the intention is to heal, the body will show us the way. The intentions clients bring to somatic work can act as the cohesive element which can guide our inquiry together. This emergent information which arises during sessions can be a way our client is letting us know what is important and what is ready to be looked at next.

The workshop process will aspire to model all the concepts and practices being taught.

The 5 points of exploration for this workshop:

  • Anchoring in our practitioner body.  Moving from our wisdom and deep trust of the client’s innate inner medicine. Moving from an invitational stance.

This workshop is for healing practitioners of all types including therapists, body workers and movement teachers.

About Sage Hayes:

Since 1999, Sage Hayes (she/he/they) has been building capacity and sight towards emergent somatic practice since beginning their work facilitating anti-oppression work in schools, churches and communities.

Ripples and Rumbles: Subverting Knowing

Ripples and Rumbles: Subverting Knowing

Subversion. The dictionary definition is “to turn from below.” At Big Waves, we yearn to turn things…the things that are getting in the way of collective liberation. We work with organizations pursuing that vision, and we focus on the turning. We think about subversion, and we think of “below” as places that are hidden, unspoken, taken for granted, and invisible. Inside ourselves, and in our relationships.

Last year we talked about this in a series of public, recorded conversations we called Ripples and Rumbles. We talked about queerness, power, conflict, and reconciliation. We’ve been thinking about those conversations, and how so many of us sense there is a different leap we can make, a hidden path we can find, beyond all of the big hearted and heavy lifting so many are already joined in. One of the explorations we are most energized by is an exploration of knowing, not knowing, and its realms. What kinds of knowing are prioritized and reproduced, and what kinds are ignored or silenced? How are our efforts to transform affected by this?

We are about to explore this with others again, in a free series of public and recorded conversations that we are calling Ripples and Rumbles: Subverting Knowing. It will be a five part series, setting the stage first with the story of knowledge as we understand it today, and then considering less dominant forms of knowledge: outsiderness, edge work, disorientation, imagination, and sensual and embodied knowing. We will close with a step back from knowing, to being.

The first conversation:

Everything You Need To Know About Knowing

(at least for this series ;)

For the first conversation, we thought we’d talk with someone who’s studied knowing closely, to get a handle on just what it is we are going to be talking about over the course of the series.

Sofía Ortiz-Hinojosa graduated with a PhD in philosophy from MIT and began teaching at Vassar College in 2016. She specializes in philosophy of psychology and psychopathology, epistemology, and Latin American Philosophy. She is the recipient of a Mellon New Directions Fellowship for 2023-2026 for her project entitled, "Mesoamerican Worldviews: How Indigenous Thought Influences Philosophy in Latin America.”

In talking with us about Ripples and Rumbles and how she could help us open it, Sofía offered so many interesting topics and ideas we thought about doing the whole series with her! How do we know what we know? Who decides that? How do we decide who decides? Is scientific knowledge “better” than spiritual or mystical knowledge? How can we disagree better? Why are so many mainstream scientists still dismissing Indigenous knowledge and what’s resulting from that? And much much more.

Please join us on July 25 at 2pm EST / 3pm AST for this juicy conversation! There will be opportunity for participants to ask questions throughout.

Link to join will be emailed to registrants.

Love at the Center: Politicized Healing and Collective Liberation

SICILY, ITALY

OCTOBER 14-22, 2024

INVITATION ONLY.

We are a community of practitioners, dreamers, weavers, activists, doulas, seers, high priestesses, bodyworkers, anti-racist organizers, somatic and trauma therapists, visionaries, and most of all- humans who want to engage and converge our creative energies to birth new worlds (within and beyond ourselves!)

We are coming from Serbia/Netherlands, Germany, Spain, US, Mexico, Romania, Kenya, Guatemala, Oaxaca, Tunisia, South Africa, Colombia, Georgia, Philippines, Bosnia, Canada, and Thailand.

We are located in various social justice movements in the Global South, some of us are Global Majority folks, some of us from indigenous lands and wisdom traditions, all of us are holding healing spaces for our beloved communities and movements.

This initiative is one of a kind, our very first step is gathering - it's an experiment in solidarity practice, and what it takes to birth new worlds.

The proposed gathering (5 days) will be place-making experiments dedicated to expanding what enters our bodies, how we metabolize, and what imaginative possibilities exist beyond our day-to-day.

This path recognizes that knowledge and truth are discovered and enriched through diverse perspectives and dialogues. This space is imagined and created to embrace the journey as a collaborative exploration, where trust is placed in the collective rather than solely in the authority of a few. We embrace the humility and openness of "a way" (rather than “the way”) that evolves through collective wisdom and shared experience.

If we can imagine it, we can make it real.

If we can recognize our connection, we can tend right relationship.

We will engage with our unique edges, personally and collectively.

  • Focus on our roots, communal practice, and rituals.

  • Use somatic movements, constellations work, and kundalini awakening as portals

  • Be each other's Medicine

  •  Slow down and collectively make present our human experiences

  • Use simple and powerful creative music and practices to engage with new visions of desire, pleasure, longing, and liberation.

  • Actively practice  and learn from each other and move with the speed of relationships

  • Create space for profound, slow, imaginative exploration.

Each person who enters the space matters on this journey of new culture creation, and we each bring medicine and contributions that help foster the soil in which new and reclaimed knowledge/experiences/imaginings can take root.

Like ripples on water, we trust that even small moments of encounter can have seen and unseen impacts on our relationships and worlds that are impossible to measure.

We want to explore:

  • Building and re/imagining Community

  • Care Ecologies: Generating and crafting a space of mutual reverence, respect, dignity, and care. It's a direct challenge to the dehumanizing aspects of dominant culture and an embrace of the unknown possibilities present in moving at the speed of relationships.

  • Un/learning for Liberation: We want to move beyond harmful cultural narratives. The politicized healers’ space invites us into an experience of un/learning, which is about coming into a deliberate and discerning relationship with what supports personal and collective liberation and what does not, valuing an embrace of our multiple and diverse intelligences.

SANADORES POLITIZADOS:

  •  Ralentizar y presenciar nuestra experiencia humana juntos

Embodied Reparations

Join Kusum Crimmel, Erin Sweeney and myself in this 6 session program.

“What does it mean, as white bodied people, to engage in reparations in an embodied way? From a place of relationship and connection rather than guilt and shame? How do our ancestors want to support in this? How does our lineage inform the ways in which we engage in reparations? How does place and land shape and inform this process?”

Explore, embody, and evolve our understanding, practices, and current paradigm toward repair, reparation, healing, and reconfiguration of our responsibility as white folx in cultural genocide, slavery, and the ongoing abuses of white supremacy.

This is a six-part pilot series for white-bodied people to come together with intention and care to explore the possibilities of embodied reparations. Co-created by 3 seasoned facilitators and space holders, we will explore specific steps toward reparations and an embodied and reparative stance anchored in truth-seeing, amends, community, and mutual liberation.

We will use genealogical research, storytelling, sharing, family constellations, somatic practices, and collective witnessing as tools to support the energetic, emotional, cognitive, and embodied metabolizing of collective racialized trauma. In community, we will work toward earnest reparation, authentic solidarity, and relinquishment of supremacy in all its forms.

Let’s explore together.

Sessions will be held on zoom.
