We die the way we live.
— Ondrea Levine
Love in its fullest form is a series of deaths and rebirths.
— Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes

An embodied exploration of life and death.

Facilitated by Sage Hayes

A seven week arc in which we prepare, together, to move to / dance to the songs we want played in observance and celebration of our life and death.

This is a unique invitation to join an intimate exploration in circle to explore movement and dialogue - what it means to prepare to let go, to offer up our vitality to change and dance into portals of our mortality and mystery.

Why death songs?

I am interested in what arises from the ‘wisdom of no return’, particularly in the light of ongoing political and global suffering. What medicines are most relevant in these threshold times? What actually might compel us to change and transform with more efficient zest? What is ready to die?

After the U.S. elections it became clearer than ever that white supremacy and misogyny are so deeply rooted in the reptilian nervous system of our collective body and we need a lot more than talk and mantras. In this light, I have been wondering what can bring us to our knees quicker, to offer up our deepest fears of the other, towards love and each other?

death songs is an invitation to explore the reality of death and dying, to make it personal by picking the song(s) you’d like played at your memorial/funeral/goodbye party and using them as a doorway to let go of what we don’t need anymore and to flow into the unknown spaces of life, death and the all between and around them.

Note: This is a pilot project. What this means is that this is the first time death songs is being offered. This makes it particularly special and also emergent and experimental for not just me as the facilitator but for you as the participant. If you’re looking for a polished and perfect experience, this is not it. If you’re open to being in collaborative process, giving feedback and stepping into something new, this could be for you.

the journey:

Week 1: Opening the space, intentions, prayers.

Week 2. Ground, ancestors and circle building.

Week 3. Beginning to let go, a practice. What is not needed.

Week 4. Embodied relinquishment, lightening the load.

Week 5. Ouroboros. Where pain meets love and love meets pain

Week 6. Death songs, we move into and through.

Week 7. Death songs, we move into and through. Closing.

emergent conditions

each week you will be invited to move, dance, sit, share.

death songs will foster collective and individual explorations. we’ll explore through small and large group work. all aspects of the experience will be invitational meaning that you can participate as little or as much as you’d like. As the facilitator the values I hold most strongly in this process are consent, looking for where there is ease and flow, collaborative movement, deep listening and shared responsibility for group care.

Into the Blue

INTO THE BLUE.

Retreat … AND ARRIVE.

Communion, constellation & creativity.

Join Suzi Tucker and Sage Hayes to journey into the blue of the Aegean Sea at Oikia Karapanou [House of Angels].  Aegina is one of the Saronic Islands of Greece just an hour ferry ride from Athens.

Oikia is above all a house with a soul. Somehow the essence of a house, surrounded by an enchanted garden. Nothing here is formal, nothing is standardised. We are not a hotel, nor a seminar factory. Oikia is a real house. Simple, spacious, poetic, refined. A place where guests often tell us that they feel as if they have finally arrived home.

Our offerings will be spacious, nourishing, and at times, emergent. We invite you to drop into the magic of Aegina with the intention of fostering community as an essential way to know ourselves. The idea is simple, to join forces to teach the things we love in surroundings that naturally support and expand those things.

Some of the words and intentions we are invoking – spaciousness, collaboration, flow, brilliance, generosity, connection, attention, intention … Communion represents the weave of all of this. An organic exchange that finds its own rhythm.

Constellation is a lens accompanied by a process. The lens is wide-angled, even as it focuses on specific themes and questions. As facilitators, we are not looking for solutions; we are looking for openings, loosenings, and freedom. The wide-angle lens sees the question and also takes in the ground around it and our relationship to it.

The constellation process is not one thing—it provides shared access to the heavy images that, once lifted from the body, can be walked around and even walked away from. When the pain we carry, perhaps have carried forever, is given a place, it may not have to take every place. We witness this in the individual and in the generational body.

Creativity is how we reach out to the world and reach into the heart. It can’t be owned or measured by others. Movement, collage, photography, writing, cooking, storytelling, reading, waking up in the morning and stepping out are all creative acts. Together, we will discover where expression wants to lead us.

FLOW

The flow of days will include breakfast and dinners together. Suzi will offer constellations and opportunities to write into and out of experience. Sage will open space for movement/dance, photography adventures and other emergent embodied explorations.  We will be joined by some glorious friends who will show us around the island and teach us about local mythologies.

All activities will be optional although our hope is that we will spend time traveling together into our inner and outer worlds.  The beach is just a 5-minute walk down the path and there will be ample time for adventuring, solo and together.

Aegina offers a great number of sights and natural beauties. The island’s highlight is the famous Aphea Temple built circa 500 B.C. which we will be visiting with a local guide. The temple forms an equilateral triangle with the Parthenon and the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, the “holy triangle” of the antiquity.

Accommodation and space:

The house can host 18 persons. There are 7 twin bedrooms (one with a double bed), one three-bed room, and one single. You’re welcome to request the single room for an extra fee of 140€ total, please email sage@embodiedliberation.com.

There are 5 bathrooms in the house. One of them is ensuite to one of the bedrooms. The other 4 are shared. There are also 2 outdoor showers in the garden. The living room, the balconies, the huge garden, the sea at 3 minutes walking distance.

The upper floor of the house contains a bright 40 square-meter hall, surrounded by windows facing in all directions, which leads out onto two big terraces facing east and west.

Emergent Somatic Practice

THIS WORKSHOP IS FULL.

Join us in community and practice the weekend of November 15-17th, 2024 in Ottawa, Canada for the workshop Emergent Somatic Practice with Sage Hayes, organized locally by Anne Walzak.

When the intention is to heal, the body will show us the way. The intentions clients bring to somatic work can act as the cohesive element which can guide our inquiry together.  One of the biggest learning edges and opportunities in practicing somatics is learning to utilize emergent and spontaneous openings with clients.  There’s often a lot more guiding information available than we ‘think’ there is.  The nervous system and body are constantly sending out non-verbal clues which can point us in surprisingly effective and helpful directions.  Clues can show up in the form of body movements, changes in vocal prosody, phrases a client uses which might have extra weight, energetic shifts, sacred pauses, ‘random’ detours and intuitive guidance.  This emergent information which arises during sessions can be a way our client is letting us know what is important and what is ready to be looked at next.

Part of this territory includes setting conditions which gently encourage these embodied clues, to then notice when they arrive and to be able to meet them well and effectively in the moment with something exploratory and experiential.  This way of practice takes patience, courage and the willingness to open states of listening to and beyond our ‘practitioner mind’.

Our role is to become extraordinary listeners, to become attuned to non-linear realms of somatic communication and to accompany these movements from the deep with skill and care.  Listening and moving into a more emergent somatic practice can facilitate a less dominant flow of movement during sessions and generate more collaborative change.

In this experiential workshop we will open our capacity as somatic practitioners to work with emergent somatic material arising in our sessions.   We’ll explore many ways of listening and the varied elements of what we might be listening for.

The workshop process will aspire to model all the concepts and practices being taught.

The 5 points of exploration for this workshop:

  • Anchoring in our practitioner body.  Moving from our wisdom and deep trust of the client’s innate inner medicine. Moving from an invitational stance.

  • Clarifying and kindling client intentions to animate a collaborative map of healing.

  • Increasing our capacity for utilization of the ‘sacred pause’ and uncertainty

  • Learning to listen for non-cognitive somatic cues and clues.  Discerning between movements of adaptive habit or movements of health.  How to spot energetic willingness.

  • Translating somatic information into experiential exploration and spontaneous activities.

This workshop is for healing practitioners of all types including therapists, body workers and movement teachers.

About Sage Hayes:

Since 1999, Sage Hayes (she/he/they) has been building capacity and sight towards emergent somatic practice since beginning their work facilitating anti-oppression work in schools, churches and communities. Sage began studying healing arts in 2000 including somatic experiencing, biodynamic craniosacral therapy, therapeutic touch, developmental trauma work, family and systemic constellations and embodied anti-oppression work of all sorts.  Sage was a lead assistant with the Somatic Experiencing Institute for many years and mentors somatic students from all types of modalities.

Sage hails from Peaks Island off the coast of Maine and enjoys a vibrant local life while having the great honor to travel facilitating and teaching with somatic students around the world.  Most recently Sage has been offering embodied movement classes and somatic mentoring support with individuals and groups. Ripples and Rumbles: Subverting Knowing

Ripples and Rumbles: Subverting Knowing

Subversion. The dictionary definition is “to turn from below.” At Big Waves, we yearn to turn things…the things that are getting in the way of collective liberation. We work with organizations pursuing that vision, and we focus on the turning. We think about subversion, and we think of “below” as places that are hidden, unspoken, taken for granted, and invisible. Inside ourselves, and in our relationships.

Last year we talked about this in a series of public, recorded conversations we called Ripples and Rumbles. We talked about queerness, power, conflict, and reconciliation. We’ve been thinking about those conversations, and how so many of us sense there is a different leap we can make, a hidden path we can find, beyond all of the big hearted and heavy lifting so many are already joined in. One of the explorations we are most energized by is an exploration of knowing, not knowing, and its realms. What kinds of knowing are prioritized and reproduced, and what kinds are ignored or silenced? How are our efforts to transform affected by this?

We are about to explore this with others again, in a free series of public and recorded conversations that we are calling Ripples and Rumbles: Subverting Knowing. It will be a five part series, setting the stage first with the story of knowledge as we understand it today, and then considering less dominant forms of knowledge: outsiderness, edge work, disorientation, imagination, and sensual and embodied knowing. We will close with a step back from knowing, to being.

The first conversation:

Everything You Need To Know About Knowing

(at least for this series ;)

For the first conversation, we thought we’d talk with someone who’s studied knowing closely, to get a handle on just what it is we are going to be talking about over the course of the series.

Sofía Ortiz-Hinojosa graduated with a PhD in philosophy from MIT and began teaching at Vassar College in 2016. She specializes in philosophy of psychology and psychopathology, epistemology, and Latin American Philosophy. She is the recipient of a Mellon New Directions Fellowship for 2023-2026 for her project entitled, "Mesoamerican Worldviews: How Indigenous Thought Influences Philosophy in Latin America.”

In talking with us about Ripples and Rumbles and how she could help us open it, Sofía offered so many interesting topics and ideas we thought about doing the whole series with her! How do we know what we know? Who decides that? How do we decide who decides? Is scientific knowledge “better” than spiritual or mystical knowledge? How can we disagree better? Why are so many mainstream scientists still dismissing Indigenous knowledge and what’s resulting from that? And much much more.

Please join us on July 25 at 2pm EST / 3pm AST for this juicy conversation! There will be opportunity for participants to ask questions throughout.

Link to join will be emailed to registrants.

Love at the Center: Politicized Healing and Collective Liberation

SICILY, ITALY

OCTOBER 14-22, 2024

INVITATION ONLY.

We are a community of practitioners, dreamers, weavers, activists, doulas, seers, high priestesses, bodyworkers, anti-racist organizers, somatic and trauma therapists, visionaries, and most of all- humans who want to engage and converge our creative energies to birth new worlds (within and beyond ourselves!)

We are coming from Serbia/Netherlands, Germany, Spain, US, Mexico, Romania, Kenya, Guatemala, Oaxaca, Tunisia, South Africa, Colombia, Georgia, Philippines, Bosnia, Canada, and Thailand.

We are located in various social justice movements in the Global South, some of us are Global Majority folks, some of us from indigenous lands and wisdom traditions, all of us are holding healing spaces for our beloved communities and movements.

This initiative is one of a kind, our very first step is gathering - it's an experiment in solidarity practice, and what it takes to birth new worlds.

The proposed gathering (5 days) will be place-making experiments dedicated to expanding what enters our bodies, how we metabolize, and what imaginative possibilities exist beyond our day-to-day.

This path recognizes that knowledge and truth are discovered and enriched through diverse perspectives and dialogues. This space is imagined and created to embrace the journey as a collaborative exploration, where trust is placed in the collective rather than solely in the authority of a few. We embrace the humility and openness of "a way" (rather than “the way”) that evolves through collective wisdom and shared experience.

If we can imagine it, we can make it real.

If we can recognize our connection, we can tend right relationship.

We will engage with our unique edges, personally and collectively.

  • Focus on our roots, communal practice, and rituals.

  • Use somatic movements, constellations work, and kundalini awakening as portals

  • Be each other's Medicine

  •  Slow down and collectively make present our human experiences

  • Use simple and powerful creative music and practices to engage with new visions of desire, pleasure, longing, and liberation.

  • Actively practice  and learn from each other and move with the speed of relationships

  • Create space for profound, slow, imaginative exploration.

Each person who enters the space matters on this journey of new culture creation, and we each bring medicine and contributions that help foster the soil in which new and reclaimed knowledge/experiences/imaginings can take root.

Like ripples on water, we trust that even small moments of encounter can have seen and unseen impacts on our relationships and worlds that are impossible to measure.

We want to explore:

  • Building and re/imagining Community

  • Care Ecologies: Generating and crafting a space of mutual reverence, respect, dignity, and care. It's a direct challenge to the dehumanizing aspects of dominant culture and an embrace of the unknown possibilities present in moving at the speed of relationships.

  • Un/learning for Liberation: We want to move beyond harmful cultural narratives. The politicized healers’ space invites us into an experience of un/learning, which is about coming into a deliberate and discerning relationship with what supports personal and collective liberation and what does not, valuing an embrace of our multiple and diverse intelligences.

SANADORES POLITIZADOS:

  •  Ralentizar y presenciar nuestra experiencia humana juntos

Embodied Reparations

  • Embodied Liberation (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join Kusum Crimmel, Erin Sweeney and myself in this 6 session program.

“What does it mean, as white bodied people, to engage in reparations in an embodied way? From a place of relationship and connection rather than guilt and shame? How do our ancestors want to support in this? How does our lineage inform the ways in which we engage in reparations? How does place and land shape and inform this process?”

Explore, embody, and evolve our understanding, practices, and current paradigm toward repair, reparation, healing, and reconfiguration of our responsibility as white folx in cultural genocide, slavery, and the ongoing abuses of white supremacy.

This is a six-part pilot series for white-bodied people to come together with intention and care to explore the possibilities of embodied reparations. Co-created by 3 seasoned facilitators and space holders, we will explore specific steps toward reparations and an embodied and reparative stance anchored in truth-seeing, amends, community, and mutual liberation.

We will use genealogical research, storytelling, sharing, family constellations, somatic practices, and collective witnessing as tools to support the energetic, emotional, cognitive, and embodied metabolizing of collective racialized trauma. In community, we will work toward earnest reparation, authentic solidarity, and relinquishment of supremacy in all its forms.

Let’s explore together.

Sessions will be held on zoom.

They will be at your disposal to adapt the menus to your needs. The food is based on vegetables, pulses, grain and dairy products – basically semi-vegetarian, with poultry and fish on offer every two to three meals if you like.

When you fill out your retreat info sheet we will ask you about food allergies, sensitivities and needs.

RETREAT COST

We are interested in this retreat being as accessible as possible while balancing our expenses.   We have set up a pricing tier and ask that you consider what level you can afford while staying in alignment with your budget.  In addition, we know flights/travel are additionally pricey and we imagine that some of you might be able to reach out to your communities to ask for financial support to support this journey.

Your retreat cost covers:

  • 7 days/nights of lodging

  • Two meals a day + snacks

  • Transportation to/from Aegina Port to Oikia Karouponou

  • Offsite trips

  • Activities during our retreat

Cost tiers:

  • Tier 1:  1000 euros (4 spots available)

  • Tier 2: 1250 euros (4 spots available)

  • Tier 3: 1500 euros (4 spots available)

  • Tier 4: 1750 euros (4 spots available)

For currency translation, go here

To book your spot, we ask for a 200 euro deposit.  On the deposit payment link we will ask you to indicate what payment tier you are choosing.   Balance in full is due by May 11th which is 6 weeks before the beginning of the retreat.  You can indicate in your deposit if you’d like us to send you an invoice for balance in full or split up into four payments.

PAY DEPOSIT HERE.

If you need help deciding what tier to choose, here are two resources which can help you decipher your payment level:

“The sliding scale represents the idea that financial resources, including income, are not and should not be the only determining factor in whether or not someone can access services/care/etc.

Please be mindful that if you purchase a price at the lowest end of the scale when you can truthfully afford the higher ticket prices, you are limiting access to those who truly need the gift of financial flexibility. Being honest with yourself and your financial situation when engaging with sliding scale practices grows strong and sustainable communities. It also respects the work of teachers and creators.”

 TRAVEL OVERVIEW

We’re more than happy to offer some travel planning support.  We will set up a closed event facebook page so that our group can coordinate travel together if that is your preference.

Arrival in Athens:

There is no airport in Aegina. The closest one is Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos", which receives both domestic and international flights all year round. Upon your arrival at the airport of Athens, you need to reach Piraeus port and embark on the ferry that transfers you to Aegina.  The ferry trip is between 45 minutes - 1 hr and 15 minutes.

Participants coming from other countries will fly into Athens International airport. If helpful, we can help you coordinate your travel from the airport to Piraeus port.  You can travel quite reasonably by train or shuttle bus from the airport to the port where you’ll catch the ferry.  Taxi from airport to the ferry is another option but more expensive.  Check out here for more Athens travel info.

Flights to Athens:

We recommend using a fare watcher with your dates and cities.  Google flights and hopper are great options.

Ferry to Aegina from Piraeus.

Check out ferry schedules here: https://www.ferryhopper.com/en/

We will pick you up at the port in Aegina and provide transportation to Oikia which is a short 7 minute drive.  We will also provide transportation back to Aegina port on departure day.

Liberatory Attunement with Lis Newell and Sage Hayes

Sunday, October 26th, 4-7pm EST on Zoom

(also offered October 17th, 2-5pm EST)

Lis and Sage will support practitioners to make the link between how systems of supremacy impact our personal histories/positions and how this in turn impacts the therapeutic spaces we facilitate.

Colonial psychology & psychiatry reveal their allegiance to the status quo in their approach to trauma: That resourcing must come from within oneself rather than from the collective. That trauma recovery is feeling safe in society, when in fact society is the source of trauma.

Colonial somatics & psychotherapies teach that the body must relearn to perceive safety. But the bodies of the oppressed are rightly interpreting danger. Our triggers & explosive rage, our dissociation & perfect submission are in fact skills that have kept us alive.
— Kai Cheng Thom

Attunement with our client’s experience of historical, economic and social context is crucial to creating new possibilities for connection and healing, both personally and in community. Strengthening our understanding of supremacy and capacity for the inter-complexities of trauma can offer us new ways of seeing, affirming and holding our clients.

We will have a wide container for case consultations, personal explorations, and Q+A with two folks who have been doing somatic and community work for 25 years. We are intentionally limiting space to 12 participants so we can have a small and intimate group process. Two dates offered- save your spot!

Gender Diversity and Somatic Practice

Gender Diversity and Somatic Practice

In collaboration with SE Germany

Taught in English, translated live to German

Gender Diversity and Somatic Practice

“If you want to improve the world, start by making people safer.” - Dr. Stephen Porges

In somatic experiencing we strive to offer relational conditions towards healing and physiological safety. Offering ‘safe’ presence requires us to expand our understanding of clients who come from different backgrounds than ourselves. When most of us have been taught to believe that gender is binary male/female, how do we enlarge our capacity and beliefs when transgender, non-binary and gender non-conforming clients contact us for our services. How do we create a ‘safe and informed space’ for these clients in our practice or choose to refer them out if our bias is getting in the way?

Transgender, gender non-conforming and non-binary people have resilient nervous systems in the face of historic discrimination and ongoing marginalization. Nervous systems which experience ongoing trauma of oppression require a different approach for somatic work. We will explore what it means to work physiologically with the impacts of chronic social trauma. Long term fight/flight/freeze adaptive management strategies are necessary for safety in the face of a daily transphobia. How do we work skillfully with these complexities?

This workshop will offer you an orientation to gender diversity, an overview of pronoun use and increase your professional competency to work with trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming clients.

This workshop will offer a mix of didactic education, dyads, triads and Q&A.

We welcome you to this workshop if you:

  • Are open to learning about gender diversity

  • Come with an open mind and heart

  • Are willing to look at the biases you have learned about trans people

  • Have a desire to create a more inclusive practice
